That’s a great question, and it’s understandable why people feel overwhelmed. The process can seem daunting at first glance. I always advise clients to start with the fundamental step of taking inventory of their assets.
This involves creating a comprehensive list of everything you own. Ordinarily, this includes tangible assets like real estate, vehicles, and valuable personal property. But it also encompasses intangible assets such as investments, retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and intellectual property.
Consequently, having a clear picture of what constitutes your “estate” is crucial for making informed decisions about how you want those assets to be distributed after your passing. Moreover, this inventory serves as the foundation for all subsequent estate planning steps.
I’ve encountered situations where individuals underestimated the value of their assets, leading to complications and potential disagreements among heirs. It’s important to remember that even seemingly insignificant items can hold sentimental or monetary value.
I recall one case where a client thought her antique china collection was worth very little. However, upon appraisal, it turned out to be quite valuable, and she was relieved to know it would be properly accounted for in her estate plan.
According to the AARP, nearly 70% of Americans do not have a will or trust. Taking inventory of assets is a critical first step in ensuring that your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are protected (AARP, 2023).
