Moreover, we must also file and pay any applicable federal and state taxes on behalf of the deceased. This often includes income taxes for the final tax year, as well as estate taxes, if the estate value exceeds the federal exemption threshold.
The process can be complex, especially when dealing with multiple creditors or intricate tax situations. Notwithstanding these challenges, it’s imperative to handle debts and taxes meticulously. Failure to do so can result in personal liability for the executor or administrator.
I recall a case where an estate had numerous outstanding credit card debts. The family was overwhelmed and unsure how to proceed.
